ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – [Final Site Schedule] [Bracket | Photo Recap] Uchenna Kanu became the NAIA Women’s Soccer all-time points leader as three of the four top seeds advanced to the semifinal round in the quarterfinals of the 2019 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship, presented by The Wharf. While Northwestern Ohio provided late game dramatics, Southeastern (Fla.) advanced in the lone overtime match of the day.
GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS
No. 12 Marian (Ind.) def. Eastern Oregon, 1-0
- Drew Mason scored in the seventh minute for Marian, which proved to be the difference, in a 1-0 win over Eastern Oregon.
- The goal was Mason’s third of the season.
- The Marian victory extended its winning streak to seven games.
- Friday will be Marian’s first trip to the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship Semifinal Round.
- Eastern Oregon outshot Marian 4-3 in shots on goal.
- Alexis Patenaude recorded her ninth shutout of the season.
- Marian will be the lowest seed to clinch a berth to the NAIA Women’s Soccer semifinal round since 2016 when unseeded Northwest (Wash.) and Baker (Kan.) both won their way there.
No. 1 William Carey (Miss.) def. No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan, 6-1
- Ana Paula Santos capitalized on two of her four, first-half shots to put her Crusaders up 2-0 after 45 minutes.
- Santos will enter the semifinal round with 18 goals to her credit.
- Lexis Garcia cut the Indiana Wesleyan deficit in half less than five minutes into the second half. It was Garcia’s 17th goal of the season.
- William Carey netted four, second-half goals to secure its spot in the semifinal round. The win will keep the Lady Crusaders’ hopes alive to repeat as NAIA National Champions.
- Silvia Leonessi, Itzayanna Gracia, and Adrijane Felix have now scored in both matches at the final site.
- The Crusaders outshot the Wildcats 30-6 in the match. Of the 30 shots, 14 were on goal.
- William Carey has not lost since September 19 against Westmont (Calif.). The Warriors will play for a spot in the semifinal round in the third match of the day.
No. 2 Keiser (Fla.) def. No. 7 Westmont (Calif.), 2-1
- Benedikte Schroeder scored in the first seven seconds of the match for Keiser to give the Seahawks an early 1-0 advantage. Schroeder scored from midfield on an assist from Josefine Troneby.
- Westmont tied the match at one in the 36th minute on an impressive goal from Bri Johnson. It was the forward’s 15th goal of the season.
- Caroline Jensen came through for Keiser and posted the game winner with 23:21 remaining. It was the freshmen’s eighth goal of the season.
- Jensen’s game-winner was her fifth of the season.
- Keiser extended its winning streak to 20 games. Its last loss was to William Carey (Miss.) on September 9 in overtime.
No. 6 Southeastern (Fla.) def. No. 3 Northwestern Ohio, 2-1 (OT)
- Southeastern outshot Northwestern Ohio 11-1 in the first half. Racers’ keeper Lisa Venrath made six stops in the opening frame of play.
- In the 72nd minute, Uchenna Kanu set another record in her illustrious NAIA career. The senior buried the first goal of the game to break the 0-0 tie. The goal also put Kanu at the top of the NAIA Women’s Soccer record book as the all-time leader in points with 363 points.
- The point record bested the previous mark set by Kristin Neher of William Jewel (Mo.) in 2004.
- Kanu recorded her second goal, the game winner, in the 96th minute. With the second goal, she now has 365 career points.
- Kanu now has 157 goals and 51 assists in 78 matches.
- Northwestern Ohio scored the equalizer in dramatic fashion. Jeweleen Reuille scored with 24 seconds remaining to tie the match and send it to overtime. The freshman has scored in both matches at the final site.
- Southeastern returns to the national championship semifinal for the second consecutive season.
- The loss stopped a 17-game win streak for Northwestern Ohio.
