CLINTON – Mississippi College’s Kathy Hammond was named Gulf South Conference Cross Country Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Hammond impressed in her debut for Mississippi College. The Montgomery, Ala., native finished sixth in the competitive UAH Chargers Invitational to pace the Lady Choctaws. She posted a time of 18:10.45 with an average mile of 5:51 and was the top freshman finisher in the 5K race.
She helped lead the squad to a team average of 18:26 during the race. The mark bested the previous best of 19:15 set at the 2017 Gulf South Conference Championship.
Hammond becomes the first Lady Choctaw to garner one of the conference’s weekly awards since Emma Langley won freshman of the week on Sept. 11, 2019.
Mississippi College returns to the course on Friday, Oct. 9 as it travels to Owensboro, Ky., for the Kentucky Wesleyan University-hosted Fast Cats Classic.
