HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Mississippi College’s Jazmin Hernandez reset the school record and the Lady Choctaws posted their best finish at the Gulf South Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31 at John Hunt Park. MC finished second in the 5K race surpassing its previous-best GSC finish of third set in 2019.
Hernandez broke her previous school record of 18:01.5 as she clocked in a time of 18:00.61 and finished fifth overall at the championship. The time landed the Georgetown, Texas, product on the All-GSC First Team alongside Madeline Campbell.
Campbell finished 10th with a collegiate-best time of 18:14.33. The all-conference honor marked the fourth consecutive for the Rochester, Ill., native and her second straight time on the conference’s first team. She became the first, four-time all-conference selection in program history since Jennifer Cooper accomplished the feat in 2012.
The Lady Choctaws placed three on the All-GSC Second Team led by Kathy Hammond. The freshman finished 11th in her first collegiate championship as she posted a time of 18:32.21. Emma Langley picked up her second all-conference nod as she turned in a collegiate-best time of 18:36.50 to finish 13th. McKenzie Hargrove rounded out the all-conference selections with a time of 18:39.73 as she finished 14th. It marked the third all-conference recognition.
The five all-conference selections tie the most in program history (2007 American Southwest Conference).
Emily Berry and Ava Dickerson helped the Lady Choctaws to the program’s best conference finish since winning the ASC Championship in 2012. Berry finished 33rd with a time of 19:59.65 while Dickerson was 40th with a 20:19.42.
Lee University claimed the team and individual crown. The Lady Flames picked up their fourth straight, GSC title as she garnered 32 points and were led by Celine Ritter with a time of 17:01.68. Montevallo finished third in the team standings with 89 points and were paced by Justine Glass with a time of 17:35.52 as she finished second overall. UAH’s Kaylee Stewart brought home bronze in the individuals with a time of 17:52.28.
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 14 as it travels to Lubbock, Texas, for the Division II National Championship Invitational hosted by Lubbock Christian University.
