CLEVELAND – Long-time and legendary Delta State baseball coach Mike Kinnison is taking off the coaching cap to complete the transition to the Director of Athletics role full time.
In an open letter to the Statesmen nation, Kinnison, a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, spoke of his many years as the head baseball coach.
“Serving as coach of the Delta State Baseball program for the past 26 years has been a great honor and the pride of wearing the Green and White is second only to my faith and family,” Kinnison said. “This program has provided many great memories, relationships, and opportunities for growth and I am grateful for the treasured relationships of fellow coaches, players, parents, and fans.
“After much thought and prayer, I have reached a decision to focus completely on the duties of Director of Athletics and therefore will not return as head coach of the Statesmen next season. My heart has not allowed this to be an easy decision, I feel it is time for me to devote my full attention to serving all programs and coaches here at the school I love. It is also a great honor to lead our athletic staff and the Athletic Department.”
Kinnison said that he would continue to fulfill the duties of the head coach until his successor has been found and that a nationwide search has begun to do just that.
